JULIE HÉRAUT

Curator, Deputy Director at Le Bal

Julie Héraut is deputy director at LE BAL, the Paris institution dedicated to the documentary image, exhibitions, publications, ideas, and education, in the 18th district of Paris.

She works directly on exhibitions and research and co-curated the current exhibition, "L’Espace Entre Nous" (The Space Between Us), which presents the collection of the Wilson Centre for Photography, as well as thematic exhibitions in Le BAL's recent programming, such as "Nous Autres" (Us Others), featuring the work of Donna Gottschalk, Carla Williams, and Hélène Giannecchini, and "À partir d'elle, des artistes et leur mère" (From Her, Artists and Their Mothers), an exploration of the maternal figure in contemporary artistic practice,

WHAT JULIE AND LE BAL CAN BRING TO MASTERCLASS PARTICIPANTS

Héraut's session will give collectors a working sense of how an institution built around documentary photography, film, and video selects and frames its exhibitions differently from a museum or a commercial gallery.

Founded in 2010 by Raymond Depardon and Diane Dufour, with the support of the Mairie de Paris, LE BAL is an independent place centered on the contemporary image in all its forms: photography, video, film, and new media. It operates as a non-profit organization.

LE BAL's identity sets it apart from the grand national museums participants will also visit: it was built specifically around the documentary and social function of the image, rather than a traditional fine-art hang.
