JONAS TEBIB
Expert in the photography market
Jonas Tebib built his career inside the photography departments of the two auction houses that have historically set the pace of the photography market in Paris. He worked as a photographs specialist at Christie's, where he was called on publicly to decrypt the house's "Photographs, Icons & Styles" sales, before moving to Sotheby's, where he became Head of the Photographs Department in Paris. His work there has spanned public auction strategy, as well as editorial projects.
In recent years his practice has extended into private sales: advising individual collectors, estates and institutions on transactions conducted outside the public sale room, where discretion, valuation and relationships between buyer and seller matter as much as the auction hammer. For the masterclass, Tebib leads two sessions built around this dual expertise: a seated presentation on how the photography market actually functions, from estimate to private sale, and a guided walk through Paris Photo's Main and Emergences sectors, reading the fair's two main categories in real time.
WHAT HARRY CAN BRING TO MASTERCLASS PARTICIPANTS
Jonas will address directly what beginning collectors most often fear: buying something poorly judged or paying a price the market will not support. His sessions will give participants the vocabulary of estimates, provenance, and private sale that gallery visits and studio conversations do not (how a photograph is priced, why two prints of the same image can carry different values, and how a private sale differs from an auction or a gallery purchase).
